Tamil Panchangam – The Sacred Calendar of Tamil Timekeeping
The Tamil Panchangam is much more than a calendar – it is a spiritual and cultural compass that has guided Tamil lives for centuries. Rooted in the astronomical systems of ancient India and refined through Tamil tradition, it reflects the harmonious alignment of time, nature, and the cosmos. The Panchangam tracks celestial events using five key elements – Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatram (constellation), Yogam, Karanam, and Vaaram (weekday). These five “angams” give the Panchangam its name and form the foundation of timekeeping in Tamil Hindu traditions. Whether for planning festivals, agricultural cycles, or daily rituals, Tamil families consult the Panchangam to align with cosmic energy.
In the Tamil cultural context, time is not a mechanical measure – it is sacred. Each moment is believed to hold a specific vibration, either auspicious or inauspicious. Periods like Rahu Kaalam, Yamagandam, and Gulikai are considered unfavourable, whereas Subha Muhurthams (auspicious times) are carefully calculated for important life events such as marriages, housewarmings, and naming ceremonies. These beliefs are not rooted in superstition but in centuries of observed celestial rhythms. The Silappathikaram, one of Tamil’s five great epics, even refers to astrological timings during royal rituals, showing the deep intertwining of literature, ritual, and cosmology in Tamil heritage.
The Panchangam also marks religious and cultural events through the Tamil lunar calendar months such as Chithirai, Vaikasi, Aadi, Purattasi, and Margazhi. Each month is packed with unique festivals, fasts (Viratham), and observances, such as Thai Pongal, Aadi Perukku, Navaratri, and Karthigai Deepam. These celebrations are more than traditions – they are living expressions of Tamil philosophy, community, and gratitude to nature. Quoting the Thirukkural:
“ஊருணி நீர்நிறைஇப் பல்லியறிவன
நீரேற்றுத் தம்மெழிலி கூற்று.”
(Kural 12)
This verse reminds us that knowledge and observance must flow like the rising water – it must align with the source. In the same way, the Panchangam flows in rhythm with the cosmic order, and the wise live in accordance with it.

தமிழ் பஞ்சாங்கம் – காலத்தை வழிகாட்டும் நம் பாரம்பரியம்
- தமிழ் பஞ்சாங்கம் என்பது வெறும் நாள்காட்டி அல்ல; அது நம் வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு நாளையும் ஆன்மிக ஒழுங்குகளோடு இணைக்கும் புனிதமான காலக் கையேடு. இது பண்டைய வேத காலத்தில் தோன்றி, தமிழ் மாமுனிகளின் அறிவால் சீரமைக்கப்பட்டது. திதி (நாளின் நிலை), நட்சத்திரம் (இரவு வானிலிருந்து பாதிப்பு கொண்ட நக்ஷத்ரம்), யோகம், கரணம், வாரம் என ஐந்து கூறுகள் அதன் அடித்தளமாக உள்ளன. “பஞ்சாங்கம்” என்ற சொல் இதிலிருந்து வந்தது. இவற்றைப் புரிந்து கொண்டு வாழ்வில் ஒவ்வொரு முடிவையும் சீராக எடுக்கும் கலாசாரம் தான் தமிழரின் பாரம்பரியம்.
- தமிழ் மரபில் நேரம் என்பது வெறும் கணக்கல்ல—அது ஒரு சிந்தனையும், ஒரு சக்தியுமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. ராகு காலம், யமகண்டம், குளிகை போன்ற நேரங்கள் தவிர்க்கப்படும் நேரங்களாகக் கருதப்பட்டாலும், சுப முகூர்த்தங்கள் என்பது வாழ்க்கையின் சிறந்த தருணங்களாகக் கருதப்படும். திருமண விழாக்கள், பெயரிடல், வீடு புகுவிழா, வியாபாரம் தொடங்குதல் என அனைத்து முக்கிய நிகழ்வுகளும் பஞ்சாங்கத்தின் வழிகாட்டுதலின்பேரில் தீர்மானிக்கப்படுகின்றன. இவை அனைத்தும் சோதிடத்திற்கும், இயற்கையின் இயக்கத்திற்கும் அடிப்படையாக அமைந்துள்ளன. சிலப்பதிகாரம் என்னும் சங்ககாலக் காவியத்தில் கூட, நேரக் கணிப்புகள் அரசரின் தீர்ப்புகளுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் அளித்திருக்கின்றன.
- பஞ்சாங்கம் வருடாந்திர முக்கிய விரதங்கள், திருவிழாக்கள் மற்றும் தர்ம நிகழ்வுகளை காட்டும் வழிகாட்டியாக செயல்படுகிறது. சித்திரை, வைகாசி, ஆடி, மார்கழி போன்ற தமிழ்மாதங்களில் நடைபெறும் பண்டிகைகள்—பொங்கல், ஆடிப்பெருக்கு, நவராத்திரி, கார்த்திகை தீபம் போன்றவை—வாழ்க்கை வாழும் ஒரு நடைமுறைப் புத்தகமாகவே பஞ்சாங்கத்தை மாற்றுகின்றன. திருக்குறள் சொல்லுகிறது:
“ஊருணி நீர்நிறைஇப் பல்லியறிவன
நீரேற்றுத் தம்மெழிலி கூற்று.” (குறள் 12)
